When Matty Ulenaers saw his son making music, something special happened. Matty loved the sound and musicality that the traditional Cajon delivers, but his son Ward wasn't satisfied that he, as the only member in the band, had to sit. And so their journey started to develop a percussion instrument with mobility and ergonomics in mind. Together they developed and discovered a brand new percussion instrument called the “Cahang”. This unique instrument combines creativity, craftsmanship and is ecologically made.
Origins of the Cahang
The “Cahang” is a musical instrument specially designed to support Cajon players and other percussionists on their musical journey. Unlike the traditional Cajon, the “Cahang” offers a movable and a more ergonomic design that allows players to play more freely. But that’s not all! The horizontal shape of the “Cahang” provides extensive sound colors, providing more musical freedom and possibilities
What makes this “Cahang” even more special is that each piece is handmade. This makes each instrument unique in sound and appearance. So if you’re looking for a musical instrument that is both functional and artistic, then the “Cahang” is an excellent choice!
Unique percussion instrument
Matty contacted me in the spring of 2023 asking me to come and take a look at his new instrument. As a drummer/percussionist I was of course interested. Something new to beat, who among us isn't looking forward to that? Ultimately it led to a great collaboration, where I can use the cahang for the Fixkes theater tour.
What makes the cahang so strong compared to other cajons? The flexibility! I can now walk along with the rest of the band for our acoustic part, which is not possible with my other cajon. It is made in such a way that it adheres firmly and that you can move without sacrificing sound or playability. On the contrary, it plays a lot more ergonomics than a classic cajon.
Obviously the most important factor of an instrument is its sound, but here too Matty delivers fantastic custom work. A compact instrument, with a beautiful, warm sound and strong bass. A top instrument!
